2021- Zoo Run Safari for Children's

Written by  October 1, 2021

Well God blessed us with an absolutely beautiful day for a run to the Zoo on Saturday, September the 25th, 2021. The only thing missing was our Star families. This Covid mess has really had things turned upside down for way too long now.

A few of our families were affected by that and had to cancel at the last minute, the rest did not make it for various reasons. One of our Star moms had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer; we get the Star child in remission and then they get hit with that. We will certainly be praying for her and the family and the other families who were not able to join us this year.

We did actually have a new family that did join us and has now been added to our guest list for future events, and our face painter, Erica Brubaker who actually had to cancel at the last minute this year because of Quarantine, has also blessed us with yet another family that will be joining us next year; we are so excited about our two new additions.

There were riders that came up from Montgomery and in from Georgia in support of our Star families and Children's of Alabama. We were all so very happy to see them and have them joining us this year.

Nancy and Jon Ryan brought us Mickey & Minnie Mouse again this year (AKA Kirsten Holderfield & Conner Aldridge), which as always, was a huge hit for our new family AND the bikers. We got a kick out of how many people wanted to get their picture taken with them. Also new to this year; Miss Alabama's Outstanding Teen, Emma Terry, who was there to crown all our little princess warriors. She was just so nice, pretty and poised, a lot of folks wanted their picture taken with her as well, so we were very thankful to have her there with us this year too. We also had the Alabama Law Tigers returning and setting up with some goodie give-aways and to help us out where needed.

Let us introduce you to our newest Star, Princess Warrior Callie!

Callie was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in her right clavicle at age 8 and turned 9 four days later. Callie has been in remission since she completed treatments in June of 2017. She is in the 8th grade, now a member of the Beta Club & Marching Band, she likes to draw, read, play video games, work puzzles, spend time with her family, going to the beach and swimming. Mom is Jennifer Wilbert and she has a little brother named Grayson age 11.

We were so very blessed and thankful to have the Barber Motorsports Park and Jeff Ray, have us back as our gathering venue. Jeff was also very helpful in getting things set up and handled the parks sign in waiver, so he was there with the girls at registration. Lisa Bonta & Vicky Vail were back to handle registration for us again this year. These gals are such good friends and they lend their much needed and appreciated help in so many other ways regarding this event. We also had Jennifer & Joey there from our church to help sign in our Star families.

Another thing that we were extremely thankful for this year was a donation from Altec, making it possible for us to move the registration activities and lunch into an area in the park that was much more conducive for what we have going on, especially where the families are concerned, so Thank you Altec and we hope to have your continued support in the future.

Big Daddy Stitches stepped in this year to make our event T-shirts and donated the shirts for our "Stars". We only hate that we didn't have more time to sell those beautiful shirts online prior to the event.

Our continued, long time supporter, Rusty's BBQ in Leeds donated the delicious BBQ sandwiches again this year, along with pickles and a couple of different sauces that were good enough to drink! Golden Flake and Bud's Best Cookies along with Coca-Cola (also long time supporters) were back with us to help complete lunch for everyone. And we couldn't have done lunch without the help of our dear friend who has been there for us, working the Coke trailer, which includes distributing lunch, and who busted her butt this year, Donna Lombardo, thank you again girl.

And our Jefferson County Sheriffs Department Motor Scouts were back to make the ride from Barber to the Zoo not only fun and interesting but moat importantly...SAFE for us all again, We can't begin to Thank you guys enough for that. Jeff "Bama" Rich was back with the Bond Slaves and the CMA to do our prayer for safety for the ride and to prayer of thanks for our food.

We also have to extend our thanks to Porsche for donating their lunch hour to our riders so that Jeff Ray could take the group out on to the world famous track at Barber for several laps. Our Star families always get a big kick out of getting out on the bridge behind the museum that goes over the track, to watch the riders go by. One of our new family members however wasn't impressed, Mr. Grayson was too terrified of the height, not to mention, (cause he didn't even get that far) the glass floor portions of the bridge that let you see down to the track. They had to watch from the end of the bridge near the building, but I think they still enjoyed it, I know they really enjoyed coming through the museum; it is pretty impressive, only wish we had more time to have shown them around.

We also have to give a BIG shout out of thanks to 106.9 The Eagle Rock Radio Station, who did an excellent job of helping us to get the word out to folks about this event, and to Karen Swann at WVTM 13, and thanks to Judd Moore with Region’s and the Legion Rider's from Post#107 in Leeds for your continued support with your donations to Children's of Alabama.

The riders really stepped up this year, we had so much love and support coming from SO many of the clubs, there was such a beautiful turnout of riders, it brought me to tears, I won't lie. There were around 175 bikes riding the track and to the Zoo. The group shot from the Zoo is not an accurate depiction of the amount of folks that joined us this day; by the time we got around to getting this shot, many of the people were not around.

We were so very thankful to everyone for attending and thankful for all the blessings for our families and for Children's of Alabama.

Footnote:

We lost a family member Friday morning before the ride; you see, the motorcycle community IS an extension of family for all of us, so it hurt our hearts to hear that our dear friend and brother, Jimmie D. Buzbee went for that last ride, to forever be riding with us all and guiding us from above as he always did. His spirit was definitely with us Saturday as he sent his ride warriors from the Charity Rider's to ride with us. He is, I'm sure, organizing a "Million Mile High" Riding Club in heaven, overseeing the good works being done here on earth. He will forever remain in our thoughts, hearts and prayers, as will his family, we have only to look upwards and know he's riding the clouds! Rest in eternal peace my friend!
