Gail's Harley-Davidson Premier Invitational Motorcycle Show

Written by  December 31, 2003

Radio stations, 99.7 KY and 98.9 The Rock, presented Gail’s Harley-Davidson first Premier Invitational Motorcycle Show on December 6-7. It was held in the new Overland Park Convention Center and was a perfect choice for displaying all the bikes, providing ample vendor booths, a center stage for performances and free, nearby parking. Several thousand biker enthusiasts took time off from their holiday shopping to enjoy this fun event. Actually, many of us came away from the show with many new additions to our Christmas list!

Countless stock and custom bikes were on display, all competing for part of the $2,500 purse in the following award categories:

Dresser: Showroom paint; Street custom
Softail – FL: Showroom paint; Street custom
Sportster: Showroom paint; Street custom
Softail – FX: Showroom paint; Street custom
Dyna: Showroom paint; Street custom
Production Custom
Production Chopper
Builder Custom
Builder Chopper

Special Awards: Best Paint, Best Display, Best Engine, and Best of Show

Numerous motorcycle dealers and custom bike builders were out in full force, displaying many hot bikes, both in engine performance and style. I admired (drooled over) bikes from Brand X Choppers, Gateway Thunder, Jack Miller/American Iron Horse, Indian Motorcycle of KC North, KC Creations, and many individual owners and builders. A special mention goes out to Kendal Johnson Customs, as they came all the way from North Carolina to display their new age bike designs – very impressive style and workmanship.

I spent a lot of time looking at the fantastic paint jobs on many of the bikes. We have some of the best artists in the Kansas City area, with one being Coop's Custom Paint. Their work is more of a passion than just a paint job. There were many superb custom paint shops and individual artists represented at the show, but I will let the attached pictures do the talking. Also, Carriage Works displayed their frame design creativeness, capturing style, uniqueness and quality of workmanship. Stainless Creations and Custom Innovations provided some unique designs, which clearly proves that Kansas City has some of the best creative minds and skilled craftsman in bike innovations.

Speaking of creative minds, I spent some time looking at a couple of displays of all-in-one RV motorcycle trailers. Both Nationwide RV out of Grain Valley, MO and Middleton RV out of Festus, MO provided some great models to walk through. Both dealers are open to customizing an RV to fit just about any special requests. I will be reviewing an RV dealer in February’s issue.

The Purrfect Angelz took the stage and provided excellent entertainment! I did take a few photos, but they are not the best of quality due to either the crowd constantly moving in for a closer view, my wife’s frequent poke in my ribs, my attempt to watch the performance; or maybe all of the above. They put on several energized shows throughout both days, definitely pleasing the crowd. Also, the Bad Attitude Bikini Extreme (BABE) team was not to be missed, as they were very supportive with photo opportunities for more than eager show attendees and vendors. And last, but certainly not least, were the KY Calendar Girls. They wore special outfits, which certainly caught the eyes of many! I would be amiss, if I did not mention Fred Gonzalez, as he entertained many throughout the show with his superb caricatures and cartooning – a fun addition to the show.

Gail, congratulations - a great show, looking forward to the second annual show in 2004, and I was glad to see it was held in the new Overland Park Convention Center. Thanks go out to the many sponsors, including KC Creations, Miller Brewing Company, 980 KMBZ, 61 Sports, 96.5 The Buzz and the Overland Park Convention Center. The winning bikes will be listed and displayed in Hot Bike, Hot Rod Bikes and Street Chopper.

Gail will have a display at the World of Wheels show, February 13-15, at Bartle Hall, Kansas City, MO. See our Rally and Event Locator - Local listing for more detailed information.
