Photojournalist/Account Representative - Kansas City, MO

Dave Baxter, a.k.a. Stripe joined our staff in December, 2003, as a photojournalist. If that road name sounds familiar, you may have seen his photos on the pages of such publications as American Iron, V Twin, VQ, In the Wind, and Easyriders. Stripe attends as many rallies, bike shows, and charity runs as he can and is a major contributor of photos and articles to our magazine. His first assignment was our January, 2004, cover photo, where he snapped the awesome photo of a 1958 Harley-Davidson Duo Glide. A rider since the age of 14, he loves to help and encourage new riders. Stripe enjoys meeting new people and looks forward to catching many of our readers in the viewfinder of his digital camera. Victory Motorcycles will join the competition in NHRA’s Pro Stock Motorcycle class for the 2015 racing season. The Victory team’s riders will be two-time champion Matt Smith and his wife, Angie. “Victory is excited to enter the world of NHRA Pro Stock Drag Racing.” said Steve Menneto, VP Motorcycles for Polaris. “It is Victory’s intent to continue to test ourselves at the highest levels and the Victory Factory Racing Team is the perfect opportunity for us."

Saturday, January 3, began with a thick blanket of fog covering the southern part of the Kansas City metro area. In spite of the low visibility bikers sharing a passion for their religious faith as well as an enthusiasm for motorcycling found their way to the campus of Calvary Bible College and Theological Seminary for the 11th Annual Christian Biker Workshop sponsored by Cycle Disciples M/C. For the third time, the event was held in the Langmade Room, a facility well suited for a gathering like this. Coffee and donuts were provided by the host club. Attendance was down a bit from the previous year, most likely due to the weather situation, but there were more than 20 people present representing several different groups such as the Christian Motorcyclist Association and Heart of God Fellowship.

I had hoped to begin my trip to Sparks for the annual Biker Halloween Party on Thursday, October 24, but my departure was delayed until early Friday morning. Bike games were already in progress when I arrived at about 11:30, so I postponed setting up camp until later in the day and instead headed for the “playground” area. Friday’s bike games and people games included plank ride, horseshoe toss, basketball shoot, potato race (with tennis balls), titty licking, buff the woody, wienie bite, keg toss (men’s and women’s), drinking and riding (Don’t try this at home.), butt darts, dizzy race, sex positions, and circular potato race. Winners of each game received colorful plaques with artwork representing each event. For example, the plaque for the slow ride featured a cartoon biker mounted on a giant snail.

Kansas City is the home of the nation’s number one Bikers for Babies® fundraiser. Starting in 1995 with 130 riders and $3,000 raised, the event has seen phenomenal growth. The 20th annual RIDE attracted more than 5,200 riders and approximately an additional 1,000 people to Kansas Speedway with donations of more than $800,000 bringing the total raised to over $7.7 million. This year’s amount included $100,000 each from the NASCAR Foundation and Kansas Speedway resulting from Don Post’s selection as the winner of the Betty Jane France Humanitarian of the Year Award in December, 2013, and an additional $20,000 donated by Kansas Speedway in Don’s name as a surprise announcement during the opening ceremony. Don has volunteered for many charities for 34 years, and has been a dedicated Bikers for Babies volunteer since 1995.

On September 19 and 20, Gail’s Harley-Davidson hosted the Heartland Police Motorcycle Challenge for 2014. Twenty-six riders from 12 different law enforcement agencies registered for the event. The maze of cones marking the course was set up in the parking lot directly behind the dealership rather than using the lower lot which would have been farther from restrooms and less convenient for spectators. Having less available space than past locations, the course was more compact and therefore more challenging for the competitors. Practice was conducted on Friday, and the competition took place on Saturday.

On Saturday, September 13, thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts gathered at Gail’s Harley-Davidson in Grandview, Missouri, to pay tribute to those who perished on September 11, 2001, as a result of terrorist attacks and to honor military veterans and active military, police, and emergency services personnel.  The rally began at 9:00 a.m. and featured vendors, children’s activities, and displays of current and vintage military and emergency services vehicles. Dora the Explorer, a Remotec robot belonging to the 509th Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from Whiteman Air Force Base, was in need some cleaning up, and bikini bike wash girls Elly Jean and Bethanie had her sparkling in no time.

Dates for the 39th Annual National Labor Day Rally hosted by A.B.A.T.E. of Kansas at Perry Lake’s Paradise Point were August 29 through September 1. The gates opened at noon on Friday. Rain was forecast on and off all weekend, but fortunately Friday’s showers were mainly far to the north. Members of A.B.A.T.E. or other motorcycle rights organizations were admitted for $25 and non-members paid $40. An additional $20 was charged for recreational vehicles, campers, and all-terrain vehicles. Members of the military were eligible for a discount.
