Camp Rulo River Club

Written by  October 31, 2003

If you’re looking for a great scenic ride, some of the best catfish around, and all within a couple hour ride of Kansas City, you’re in luck!

Situated on the banks of the Missouri River, in Rulo, Nebraska, the Camp Rulo River Club, better know as Camp Rulo, offers some great down home cooking. Owners Jim and Lois Lunsford also serve chicken, steak and other excellent menu items, but my favorite is still the catfish. Just give me a plate for the salad bar, a cold beer and some tarter sauce, and I’m ready to do some serious eating while watching the river roll by.

In case you eat too much to ride home, Camp Rulo also has a campground along the river (hence the name “Camp” Rulo). Plus, if you happen to be there on Saturday evening, they offer live entertainment by some of the best local bands.

If you’re feeling lucky, you can try your hand at Keno, and if you’re feeling really lucky, Casino White Cloud is located only a stone’s throw away, as the crow flies. Casino White Cloud is a 21,000 square foot casino owned by the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska.

One of the most scenic routes to Camp Rulo from Kansas City is to simply hop on 7 Highway on the Kansas side, head north, and follow it all the way. While on you’re way there, you’ll ride through rolling hills, and several sleepy historic towns such as Leavenworth, Atchison, Troy, and White Cloud. Each town has an amazing amount of history, so make sure to allow yourself plenty of time if you decide to venture off the highway on your way north.

The next time you’re up that way, tell Jim and Lois hi and that you heard about them in Cycle Connections magazine.
